Economics Videos
Once upon a time, I attempted to teach a hybrid class, and it was a total disaster! I was trying to cram all of the content down the students' throats in our decreased face-to-face class time, and then have interaction between students in the online environment. Looking back, that's a big "DUH!!" - of course I would rather encourage the student-to-student interaction in the face-to-face environment, where it can occur more naturally! But HOW to deliver the content to them in the online environment in a way that is engaging and meaningful, so that they can process the basic concepts on their own time, and then do the application of the concepts during our face time? (Yes, everyone and their dog now refers to this model as a "flipped" classroom...)
Ultimately, I decided that what would work best for me personally was to create a series of videos that covered all of the content that I would previously have lectured on in class. Frankly, I'm pretty sure that my students MUCH prefer watching the videos to listening to me lecture in class.
Where does "Open" enter the picture? Well, when I started, the Learning Management System (LMS) that our District was using at the time was unable to give me the storage I would have required to post thirty-some videos within the class LMS, so I used YouTube, instead. And lo and behold, I started getting messages from students and instructors around the globe thanking me for posting the free materials!! I am pleased to say that I was even able to contribute to the Washington Open Library project by allowing them to use some of the videos for their collection.
